C76 with Shadow

Just purchased bunch of airmail plate blocks. One C76 - UL - has a shadow with the words: First Man on the Moon, All words on the top two stamps have the shadow - very distinct - while the bottom two have a shadow only with the First Man on. The shadow is very distinct and shows each letter very clearly. My question is what would this be categorized as - a freak, oddity, or what? Just curious as this is only time I every seen this and I don't collect these. This was the only plate block like that out of about 15. The bottom of the vignette has a slight shadow also on all stamps. No other shadows or any other abnormalities on any stamp. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank You in advance.

  • It could be a colour shift, a mis-registration, or a few other things. A scan would make it much easier to hazard a guess. Since its reproducible (on more than just one stamp) I believe that by definition it would be considered an error.
  • Maybe it was printed during an eclipse?
  • Very possible Ron! Unfortunately I don't have a scanner and I can't get a good angle with a camera. I don't believe it's a color shift but then I'm no expert on these. Any other opinions?
  • Place the stamp on a dark (black preferably) background on your desk. Use a tripod to position the camera directly over the stamp. Use the "Flower" setting so that you can get a clear close-up image. Do not use the flash. Instead, shine a yellow or white light indirectly onto the stamp. Never hold the camera with your hands when taking a close-up picture. It'll turn out blurry.

If you want to see how digital camera stamp images look, take a look at my store. All images are done using a 2.5 megapixels digital camera.
