The Brave New World

Well MR is back in control, and I look forward to see what will happen. i was pleased that there was an email from Mark today explaining a lot of what has been going on, and where he wants things to go. For the first time in a few years I sort of feel optimistic about BS, and now its new sibling, Hipstamp. I will recall SGM only in nightmares.

  • The obvious question here-- which has probably been asked and discussed already-- seems to be whether there's going to be BOTH a BidStart and a HipStamp, since they seem to basically be mirror sites?

Makes more sense that they would merge back into ONE venue, now that Mark is back to owning both.

Any sense for where that is going?
  • I have the same question. With Hipstamp being relatively new with a lot of listings and a lot of stores showing "0" feedback, I wonder how long it will take Buyers to search out this site if Bidstart continues? At the moment it seems like a lot of Sellers but no Buyers.
  • I read in another thread that Mark is leaving things as they are for now. Remember that Hipstamp is for stamps and Bidstart has everything else plus stamps.
  • As soon has Hip is fully operative, I will send an email inviting all my customers to visit Hipstamp. If everybody does this, Hipstamp will pick up speed. Presently when I get a new order on Bid/Del/EB I always include a printed sheet of offerings all with my Hipstamp address.
  • This is the newsletter which went out to bidStart customers yesterday, if anyone here did not receive it:

    Welcome Home!

This is Mark Rosenberg, the new CEO and owner of bidStart (as of this past Monday, August 1). For those of you who don’t know me, I was also the founder of bidStart back in 2005!

As many of you know, bidStart became part of the Stanley Gibbons Group back in 2012, and began to transition into the Stanley Gibbons Marketplace shortly thereafter. Which is likely why, when Stanley Gibbons officially announced last week that the Stanley Gibbons Marketplace would be closing this Friday - August 5, many bidStart members believed this meant that bidStart would be closing as well.

However, I can assure you that bidStart is NOT closing.

As originally announced on July 22, via a joint press release, myself and Stanley Gibbons announced that bidStart was being sold by Stanley Gibbons to myself (and my new venture Hip eCommerce), with the deal set to close no later than August 1. I’m happy to announce that this deal has now closed, and Stanley Gibbons is no longer involved with bidStart.

    What is Hip eCommerce?

Hip eCommerce is a company which I started in 2015, and focuses on building communities and marketplaces for individual collectible categories. Those categories currently include comic books through HipComic.com and stamps through HipStamp.com

Within HipComic.com and HipStamp.com, you’ll find a wide range of features built exclusively for collectors of comic books and stamps respectively. For example, on HipStamp listings include attributes specific to stamps, such as Country, Catalog Number, Condition, Format, and more - each of which can easily be searched upon. There you will also find our Catalog section, where you can manage your Collection and Want List; as well as browse for items for sale in Country / Catalog order.

Why did Hip eCommerce buy bidStart?

bidStart is home to a great community of collectors, with over 100,000 members and counting, and personally, having founded bidStart over a decade ago, I did not want to see the community we built together disappear. For those of you who remember our Inverted Jenny Giveaway, the Traveling Mousepad and/or the bidStart Girl - I’m sure you feel the same way.

That being said, from a business point of view, bidStart follows a different model than the other business within Hip eCommerce - in that it aims to provide a singular platform for all collectibles. This is a business model which serves different needs than that of HipComic or HipStamp, and I see no reason why bidStart can not also happily exist within the Hip eCommerce family.

    What’s Next for bidStart?

The current plan for bidStart is to continue to operate it as an independent business and website, mostly as-is and as it does today. However, we will be looking to improve customer service and site reliability. We’ll also be restarting general marketing activity shortly.

    What’s next for HipStamp?

If you’re a stamp Buyer or Seller, I would recommend that you explore and consider both bidStart and HipStamp for your stamp collecting needs.

That being said, while bidStart will remain focused on all collectibles, the main focus of HipStamp is of course collectible stamps. All of the new features we develop centered around stamp collecting will be through our HipStamp platform. We’ll also be concentrating our advertising and marketing efforts for collectible stamps within the HipStamp brand.

In particular, if you’re a stamp Seller on bidStart, you may want to consider opening a store on HipStamp, where you can use HipStamp’s bidStart Sync feature to sync all of your inventory from bidStart to HipStamp. This provides an easy way to sell on both sites - and reach more buyers, while not increasing your overhead of managing your inventory across multiple sites.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask (even by responding directly to this email). I’m looking forward to providing more detailed updates soon, and thank you for being a part of our growing community.

    Best Regards,
    Mark Rosenberg
CEO & Founder Hip eCommerce / bidStart
  • Mark:

Can you send a similar message to MarketPlace cusstomers?
  • Robert, very funny :) That's the stuff that fires up the SG lawyers.
  • Where is SG going to get money for lawyers now?
  • MARK
I HAVE A DELIMMA! I would like to sell on bid start, but I was kicked off by sg. When I told them, I would not let them hold my money for 30 days so that they could collect interest on it. AND BOOM THEY KICKED ME OFF. Now do I still have a bid start store and if so I would like to sell there and maybe on hip stamps. I have coins and many other small items that have value. I used to sell these on ebay, after I got the boot from sg. Now how can I sell stamps on bid start and hip stamp at the same time, wouldn't that be selling on 2 sites the same stamps or stamp. What would happen if 2 people both bid on the same item. Would I have 2 stores and 2 separate entities? If so I would prefer to sell on Bid Start only and be home again.
Now for a last request I think you should make shipping charges more understandable or like Bid Start was under your control and before sg took over. Thanks Gramps

  • running a site is no easy venture--I am thinking of jumping over from the Fee-bay. Will it be worth my while? I hope so--one thing: many sellers, where are all the buyers??
  • Hello Lee
You don't have to jump ship, Just Join Hip stamps because That is all we sell is stamps. and supplies and then You can test the new way of selling. Its amazing on how you can do listing and Sell or buying if you see something you like. Mark and Justin are amazing in some new and exciting ways of selling. You will be able to list faster than you ever thought possible. I will be selling all my stamps. And yes even my personal collection. I am old and not getting any younger, so I am selling out everything to the bare walls. Bring several of your friends who sell and buy Stamps There is also a site for Postcards another for COMIC BOOKS and You can Sync eBay And Hip Stamp and continue on both sites. So come on over and check things out. The buyers are coming back. We just have to get the word out. I am Grampstamps and my store Is Gramps Store And a link is Https://www.hipstamp.com/gramps-store
  • Hello Lee

If you have good inventory the buyers will visit and purchase your items. Sales in my store are doing great. I'm seeing an increase each month in the number of new buyers to Hipstamp. My old buyers from bidStart are making purchases and I see many from the old marketplace purchasing items in my store.

  • I was excited about HipStamp but I see nowhere near the buyers I had on BidStart. A big reason is the obsession with having sales. My stuff's not priced so that I can sell at 50% off or start auctions at 1 penny. Yet all the newsletters I keep getting (and promptly deleting) seem to push the idea of a sale. What about promoting HipStamps in Linn's or in other ways? I can't sell stuff for less tahn k I paid for it. Especially after paying HipStamp fees, Paypal fees and mailing costs. This is getting to be a big time stamp dealer site! BidStart was for the small fry.

Michael, many sellers price their items at 80% cat, which is, by the way, pretty much normal in the market, not just on HipStamp. You can usually tell because they do not list the catalog value in their description. They can then have a sale at 40-50% off, and that still gives them 40-48% of cat!

My sales have finally started to increase, but only after my arduous efforts in correcting the listings imported from BidStart. The data that came over did not match up with the new system very well.

I try to price my items more realistically, usually at 50%. Then, when I do a sale, it is usually 10-20%, so I still realize 40-45% -- about the same as the other dealers.

Just remember, the buyers will get to know you, and will return for more items once you prove that you are a reliable seller, just like they did on BidStart.
  • Thanks, I'm correcting them slowly but surely. It just takes time. My priicng is more complicated than that as I deal in new issues. can'r use catalog as it's frequently whet I paid for them. Scott's prices for new issues are completely unrealistic. Sometimes it's very little ofver face. They are clueless t exchange rates. I don't need any assistance.
