Item Description

The item in this listing is for a short set of mint stamps issued by the post office of French Indochina for use at the post office in Kwangchowan (in French Kouang-Tchéou-Wan, in Chinese, 廣州灣 or Guangzhouwan) in China's Guandong province. As was the case with most stamps from the French Indochinese offices, this stamp was originally a stamp issued for use in Indochina before being overprinted to show its' intended use in Kouang-Tchéou. The stamps are in mint hinged condition, and is listed in Scott as #54//59. The stamps included in the set are 54, 55, 56, 57, and 59; only #58 is not present.

Kouang-Tchéou, as it is referred to by French collectors, was a little different from the other Indochinese offices in southern China in that Kouang-Tchéou was actually more of a French colony with a post office run by French Indochina. The colony, which had approximately 500 square miles / 1300 square km of territory which included islands as well as piece of the Chinese mainland, was leased by France for a 99 year period from 1898. This lease was inspired by similar leases over German Kiautschou and the New Territories of British Hong Kong which had been signed earlier in the year. All three of these territories were roughly the same size, but only Hong Kong's lease reached its' end in 1997. German Kiautschou returned to China in 1922, and French Kouang-Tchéou was returned in 1945.
