Item Description
This cover was mailed from Yankee Jims, California to Petersburg, Virginia in 1937 franked by a purple U.S. California Pacific Expo issue of 1935, Scott 773 and a German 10M Mark red inflation issue of 1923, Scott 286. Both stamps are tied to the envelope by a 4-bar killer handstamp. The cachet depicts a prospector, possibly even Yankee Jim Robinson himself, panning for gold. Yankee Jim was an Australian so the connection with the German stamp, other than it being philatelically contrived, is unknown. Yankee Jims was an important town, located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, during the California gold rush of 1848, gold being discovered there in 1850.
Signed by the postmaster, Flora McCollam.
The backflap is tucked in and has become adhered to the envelope's inside. Small vertical tears top and bottom edges (see scans). No contents or backstamps.
The cover in the scan is the one you will receive. Light lines in images are SCANNER ARTIFACT!
Shipping always combined.
