Iceland Post, tipping their hat to Christopher Columbus in 1992 on the 400th Anniversary of his supposed 'discovery of America', nevertheless were able to promote favorite son Leif Eíríksson and his much-more-likely 'discovery' of the North American Continent nearly 500 years before Christopher C.!Iceland issued this handsome souvenir sheet, showing the vessels of both explorers and concordantly issued issued it simultaneously in Reykjavík, Iceland, and at the huge Columbian Stamp Exhibition of 1992 held in Chicago!
This cream-colored card bears the new souvenir sheet, cancelled on the First Day of Issue of 6 April 1992, and is adorned with a handcolored cachet of Columbus and Eíríksson locking eyes just as they are about to plant their respective countries' flags!
This handcolored Puffin Cachet shows the two birds on a dull green handmade envelope bearing two nice strikes of the official First Day pictorial cancel used in Reykjavik on 4 February 1997.
Note this is a card, and not an envelope. It carries the Puffin Cachets logo on the reverse, as well as the designation that this is an 'Artist's Proof'.
