Vintage Denmark Poster Stamp Jules Verne's Works Kunstforlaget (The Art Publishing House) Denmark Unused Paper Hinge Diagonal Creases 80% Original Gum. About the publisher: The art publishing house "Danmark" was founded by Heinrich Mathiasen in 1908. The publishing house was run as a mail-order business with no connection to the regular bookshop. A journalist ironically called Mathiasen the "Napoleon of books". For example, in 1913 (the year of the Jules Verne series) he published 2,645,000 books!! The basis for the success was partly that he avoided the booksellers' profit by selling directly to the readers, partly that he used relatively poor paper for the printing, used cheap printers and had the books bound at a cheap price. He offered the loose books for free, but offered the same hardbacks at a premium, prompting customers to buy the hardbacks. He advertised extensively in the daily and weekly press, among others. a. in Chr. Erichsen's "Hus og Hjem", "Berlingske Tidende" and "Politiken". At the same time, he gained a large market in Norway. The publisher was (in vain) tried to fight it by the other publishers - among others a. Gyldendal, who finally had to give up and started publishing their own "cheap book series". The publishing house almost explodes around 1913, after which it seems to disappear around 1915.
