Item Description
I apologize to all philatelists out there. My dad is 85 years young and I am trying to help him "downsize" some of his stuff. Stamps appear to be "some of his stuff". What I know about stamps would probably fit on the stamp itself, but I am trying to look things up as I go. Please, if you see something incorrect regarding my listing, let me know so that I can learn (and also correct the listing).Feel free to make an offer on anything you see listed. Thanks for looking.
This is a one cent US Postal Card with the black imprint of Grant. I believe it is from 1891. The item is cancelled, six straight lines with a "6" in the center, over the stamp. Double stamped for the round cancellation to the left of the lines, postmarked Aug 31, 1893. Looks like one postmark is from Philadelphia, PA. The other postmark is Washington, D.C. Rec'd.
The card is addressed to Mr. Robt Stein at the US Geological Survey Department in Washington. Dr. Stein, I believe, was an arctic explorer in his own right. The text (dated Aug 31, 1893) on the back side of the card (from what I could decipher) tells Mr. Stein that he needs to establishing a bank or trust fund. Also mentions "Peary" (Admiral?, the explorer) "Sorry Peary is meeting with discouragements. It ends with "Chicago was a real success". Signed by A. H. L..... (can't read signature).
The card itself has inked calculations on the front side that overwrite part of the address. The edges are worn, but the card seems to be in good shape for its age. It measures 3-3/4" x 6-1/16".
