Item Description

Cover produced in memory of the loss of the _U.S.S. Squalus_ SS-192, which sank in 1939. While testing near the Isle of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire, the sub made a trial dive on May 23, 1939, from which she never recovered. Mechanical failure caused flooding of the aft section of the ship and the Squalus went to the bottom, settling some 240 feet beneath the surface. Of the 59 man crew, 26 men perished with their ship. Black & gold cachet produced by FLK Cachets, featuring the insignia of the USS Squalus and the text "In Memoriam / To The Officers / And Men on Board / U.S.S. Squalus / SS-192 / Lost / May 23, 1939".
