Item Description
This cover was mailed from the U.S.S. Pollack to Concord, North Carolina in 1938 franked by a 3-cent violet Alaska - Mount McKinley issue of 1937, Scott 800. A U.S.S. Pollack, San Diego, California 4-bar killer handstamp ties the stamp to the cover.The printed cachet depicts the sinking ship 'Maine,' a battleship, and a sword-wielding horse rider, and reads:
'40th Anniversary Series 1898 - 1938
Spanish American War
Remember the Maine.'
Added purple handstamps include:
'In Solumn (sic) Memory
U.S.S. 'Maine' Destroyed in
Havana Harbor Feb. 15 -1898
CAPT. Sigsbee Commander.'
The backflap is un-sealed and intact. Diagonal paper production ding on front (see scan). Manuscript return address on backflap. No contents or backstamps.
