"Father Felix Varela was born in Havana, on November 20, 1788...was raised by his maternal grandparents in Saint Augustine, Florida ...then under the rule of Spain...He asserted the Spanish South American colonies right to independence, and proposed giving autonomy to Cuba and Puerto Rico. He also advocated the emancipation of slaves in Cuba for more than 40 years before the United States declared the abolishment of slavely (sic)...When the King of Spain abolished the 'Cortes,' Father Varela took refuge in the United States ...As a result of his devotion and dedication, he was named Vicar General of the New York Diocese."
