Item Description

US V-Mail letter (you can see the silver in it) --- letter is to Miss Irene Bielak, First Lieutenant, Torney General Hospital, Palm Springs, California --- from Lieutenant R. E. Hebel, Battery "C", 360th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion, A.P.O. 512, c/o Postmaster, New York, New York --- A.P.O. 512 indicates that at this time this writer is at Headquarters, MTO located in Caserta, Italy --- self-censored with R. E. Hebel signature in censor's field at upper left

Letter is dated May 30 and begins, Dear Irene --- the writer says, "It's been such a long time since I'm heard from you that I can only deduce that you are getting ready to take a boat ride. Right or wrong?" --- he continues, "I feel like taking a boat ride myself, but in the opposite direction."

He reflects, "Two years away from good women and good liquor is plenty from my point of view." --- he details, "Even now I am trying to get my thirst quenched with a bottle of G. I. Cocoa-Cola and some very inferior Italian rum." --- he comments, "At least it reminds me of a rum coke, and that's a step in the right direction."

He elaborates, "Naturally the woman situation, good or bad, is nil, and that's bad. I believe if I should meet a nice, clean properly made up American girl right now, I'd turn and run from the spot." --- he continues, "But  it would be most interesting to be put to the test!"

He adds, "of course there are a few nurses around, but somehow a military uniform seems to change one's viewpoint." --- he sums up, "just a case of a strong desire for something new and different, i guess." --- signed, as ever, dick;  dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
