Item Description
Issue: 1935 1¢ Restoration of Fort DearbornIssue Date: March 15, 1935
Historical Context: This stamp commemorates the Battle of Fort Dearborn, which occurred on August 15, 1812, during the War of 1812. The Potawatomi Indians attacked and burned Fort Dearborn, located near present-day Chicago, Illinois. The fort, built in 1803 and named after then-U.S. Secretary of War Henry Dearborn, was a site of contention between the U.S. and local Native Americans.
Event Leading to the Battle: Increased violence due to the impending war between the U.S. and Britain led many Chicago residents to seek refuge in Fort Dearborn. The British capture of Fort Mackinac prompted orders to evacuate Fort Dearborn.
The Ambush: On August 15, under Captain Nathan Heald's leadership, the fort's evacuees, including troops, militia, women, and children, were ambushed by Potawatomi warriors, leading to significant American losses.
Aftermath: The survivors were taken prisoner, and the fort was burned down. The area remained unoccupied by U.S. citizens until after the war. This event influenced the U.S. policy towards Indian removal.
Fort Reconstruction: Fort Dearborn was rebuilt in 1816, and a replica was created for the 1933 Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago.
This stamp, with its historical significance, is a valuable addition to collections focused on American history, particularly events related to the War of 1812 and early American frontier challenges. Its representation of a pivotal moment in U.S.-Native American relations and the development of the Chicago area adds depth to its collectible value.Mint (Description)
