Item Description

This stamp is an unusually deep shade of blue. It is well centered, but has perforation problems on the right side and some surface scuffing in the bottom margin near the right edge.

This stamp has never been mounted in a collection. It was among several hundred copies of Scott 230 that were packed tightly into circa 1900 Clark O.N.T. sewing thread boxes. The stamps were collected from businesses at Union City, Indiana. Although some stamps may have been collected across the state line in Union City, Ohio, I have found no evidence of that. The stamps accompanied 11-12,000 cut squares. Most of the readable postmarks are from 1891 to 1893, with the majority from 1892. The material was bundled or boxed in a manner that left most of it very well protected from damage and aging for over a century.

Although mail was coming to Union City from all over the country, much of it seemed to be coming from small cities and towns in Indiana and Ohio and to a lesser degree from smaller communities in other nearby states. In other words, most of the fancy and geometric cancels probably originated within 150 to 200 miles of Union City. Many of the cut squares have partial circular date stamps with identifiable post offices, but the origin of most of the stamps remains a mystery.
