Condition:Classic 19th Century US Banknote Postal Stamp in Used, Sound Condition. The Stamp has been Removed from its Original Posting Envelope [Off-Cover] and Features a Scarce, Distinctive "Catalogue-Listed" NYFM Fancy Cancel. The Specialized Catalogue Numbers Cited are from "The Foreign Mail Cancellations of New York City 1870-1878" by Wm. R. Weiss and "Cancellations and Killers of the Banknote Era" by James M. Cole.

General information---new york foreign mail (nyfm) fancy cancellations originated and were used exclusively by the new york city u. S. Post office's foreign mail division [@ broadway and park row]. Over 200 distinctive cancellation designs have been recorded---most recently by wm. Weiss whose 1990 reference, "the foreign mail cancellations of new york city, 1870-1878" serves as the definitive catalog for identifying these fairly elusive postal hand-carved "killers" and popular commercially-generated geometric designs.

According to weiss, the overall basic designs can be divided into four general groupings that include: geometrics (simple, circular, negative; positive), stars (4- , 6- ;multi-point types), representative designs (letters, numbers, leaves, simple; elaborate); and finally traditional designs (targets, crossroads, spokes, wedges; miscellaneous, most of which are obviously hand-carved). The large format, elaborately-designed geometrics appear to have been commercially-produced owing to the exactness of each arc and angle and the near-perfect consistency of every line width.

In 1995, james cole produced a more general catalog entitled, "cancellations and killers of the banknote era." the cole catalog identifies over a hundred unique nyfm designs by a uniquely-assigned number. Both catalogs offer an assessment of the approximate scarcity/availability status of most of the distinctive nyfm designs that have been listed in their respective catalogs. Cole's assessments nominally apply to off-cover examples whereas weiss assesses the relative availaility of both on- and off-cover examples, whenever possible.
