Historical note: the u.S.S. Eberle (dd-430) was a gleaves-class destroyer commissioned in 1940, not long before the u.S. Entered world war ii. She began her service on patrol off bermuda until she was transferred to the western section of convoy escort duty for trans-atlantic convoys off newfoundland and iceland and even as far as scotland one time.
She continued in this role until she was repurposed to support the allied invasion of north africa in 1942, where she bombarded the shore and provided other fire support during the amphibious landings in french morocco. Notably, she stopped a blockade runner in 1943, during which action half the boarding party were killed by a demolition charge before the ship sank, leaving the boarders and their prisoners to be rescued from the water by eberle.
She spent the rest of the war as an escort in the european theater of operations, during which time she broke up a german attack on transport anchorage in naples except when, in 1944, she supported the landings in southern france and even provided a landing force that captured a number of prisoners of war. She received three battle stars for her service in world war ii.
She was placed in reserve in 1946 before being decommissioned in 1951 before being transferred to the hellenic navy, in which she served as niki until 1972. For details, see: wikipedia/wiki/uss_eberle_(dd_430); dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
