Scott 883 Mellone = 46; 1940 Famous American featuring the 10c Ethelbert Nevin from the Composer series, Unknown cachet, Flap is open and cover is addressed.

For years, FDC experts have attempted to identify the cachet maker of the 859/893-46 Cachets,
described in the literature as by an Unknown Designer.
There are only a handful of unknown Famous American sets that have 35 individually drawn portraits,
it has been somewhat incredible that such a prominent set of Cachets
should remain anonymous for so long.
The prime suspect for the designer of the FA #46 cachets has been Walter Czubay.
From 1936 into the 1960s, Czubay was the leading light of Astoria Cover Service in Astoria,
Queens, New York, in partnership with Mike Sanders of Brooklyn, who was a Printer
and a Cachet maker in his own right.
