Historical note: the u.S.S. Constitution is the oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat. It is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the wind-powered era that is the last surviving of six frigates originally commissioned by president george washington in accordance with the naval act of 1794.
She fought in the quasi-war, an undeclared naval conflict with revolution-era france, and the first barbary war, including the battle of tripoli harbor. The latter was against pirates of the barbary coast who had been capturing american merchant shipping for ransom.
Constitution, however, became popularly beloved during the war of 1812 against great britain. On august 19, 1812, she and h.M.S. Guerriere, a british frigate, sighted each other and began to exchange fire. At one point, the two ships collided, but the crews were not able to board either ship.
The damage constitution caused was severe enough, however, that by the time the ships separated, guerriere had been completely dismasted and was no longer sailable, so she surrendered and was subsequently burned rather than taken into port. Because during the battle the british cannonballs had at times bounced off her hull, the ship earned the nickname "old ironsides."
She and her sisters then turned to raiding british merchant shipping, making several lucky escapes from the royal navy ships sent to deal with the threat they posed. With even luckier timing, she was slated for scrapping in 1830 after she had been in commission more than twice the length of her expected useful service life
Then, however, oliver wendell holmes published the poem "old ironsides," stirring up public support for her, and the secretary of the navy approved the repair costs, instead. She continued to serve as flagship for the mediterranean and african squadrons as well as a training ship for the naval academy for decades afterward.
She served as a floating exhibit for american artwork in the paris exposition of 1878 and was officially designated a museum ship in 1907. She last sailed under her own power on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the defeat of h.M.S. Guerriere in august 2012.
