Detailed Description
In 2011, the U.S. Postal Service® launched a stamp series to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which engulfed the nation from 1861 to 1865.

The popular series will continue in 2014 with the release of a new
souvenir sheet featuring two stamp designs, one depicting the Petersburg
Campaign and the other the Battle of Mobile Bay.

the _Civil WAR: 1864_ stamps are being issued as Forever®
stamps. These Forever® stamps will always be equal in value to the
current First-Class Mail® one-ounce rate.

Described by historian Earl J. Hess as “the longest, the most
complex, and perhaps the most important campaign of the Civil War,” the
Petersburg Campaign caused a decline in Northern morale and nearly
prevented Lincoln from winning a second term in the November
presidential election. Ultimately, however, it would lead to Richmond
and to the South’s surrender at Appomattox.

The capture of Mobile Bay was the first significant Union victory in
nearly a year. Together with the conquest of Atlanta in September, the
Battle of Mobile Bay helped restore confidence in Lincoln’s conduct of
the war and was a key factor in his reelection in November.
