Item Description

U.S. #449 used, centered a little low with WT Crowe certificate #23464 mentioning one short perf at top left. There are a lot of reasons why you want to have this stamp certified. First, there are the bad actors out there who alter #450 (type III) to make it look like #449 (type I). See images 4 & 5 for two examples from PSE's archives. Second, there are numerous misidentifications of this stamp (see images 6 - 9 for a sample of PF certs detailing stamps submitted as #449 that turned out to be various other catalog numbers). Third, with a catalog value of $650, you want to make sure there aren't any hidden flaws (thins, creases, etc.) or alterations such as reperforating that would diminish the stamp's value. And, of course, you also have to contend with the people selling stamps that really shouldn't be, like item 155391387029 that is clearly a sheet stamp listed as #449, and item 265897786470 which is clearly type III, not type I. So, as you review all the used #449's available, you'll find that you can pay $750 or more for uncertified copies or $225 for a decent stamp with a good cert. It also makes selling the stamp much easier when the time comes.

Buyer of this stamp will have one full year to trade it in for a #449 of higher quality mint or used, most likely with COA. Unfortunately, I can't credit sales tax and shipping fees, but I will credit the full $225 paid for up to one year from date of original transaction.

About shipping: I combine shipping. Any other item purchased with this will ship at no additional charge. I’m pretty sure you’ve figured out by now that there’s no such thing as free shipping. Every seller who offers “free shipping” has already baked the shipping fees into the listing price. Which means you get to pay sales tax on everything including the “free shipping.” I price my items very competitively and charge a nominal shipping fee on the first item you purchase. Every additional item really does ship free as my price doesn’t include any kind of shipping or handling charges. In most cases, the catalog value of the stamps I use to ship your item(s) will exceed whatever you have paid for shipping, so in that respect, the shipping is just about a wash.
