Item Description
Us 332 on 1910 mourning cover with letter on monogrammed stationery enclosed --- black passaic jul 4 1910 n. J. (july - new jersey) circular dated postmark with thirteen-star wavy flag cancel tying stamp to cover --- addressed to mrs.M. Leyden, reynonds street, rochester, new york --- trivial soiling --- diagonal crease at upper right corner (from front) --- cover roughly torn open at left (from front) with right piece of back flap missingLetter paper has b monogram at upper center --- letter is dated lafayette avenue, passaic, new jersey, september 16th, 1910, and begins, my dear maggie --- the writer says, "rec'vd yours last night & hasten to let you know that we have not left this place yet & the prospect is pretty slim just at present"
She explains, "here we have been all ready to start, for over a month & have been waiting fro aleck to be able to leave" --- she relates, "just as we were about to start, the mayor was shot & aleck did not like to go away & leave things in a muddle." --- she continues, "after [the mayor] was better, one or two law suits came up in the bridge department& aleck wanted to be on hand, so it has been, until alice & i are about discouraged"
She muses, "aleck says that we will go sometime before the snow flies, i am so sorry for i had anticipated such a good time with you & how we would enjoy living over our old days together again" --- she hopes, "perhaps he will be able to get away after a while so i'll live in hopes."
She describes, "alice is in bed with a bad headache, but sends lots of love to you & blanche & would dearly love to see you both & have a quiet game" --- she suggests, "i do not know of a better way than for you both to come down here this winter & have a little rest & fun."
She advises, "life is too short to have unnecessary cares & worr[ies] so have as much comfort & pleasure as you can, while you have the chance." --- she adds wistfully, "oh how i wish i could run in this morning & see you both if you have a spirit visitor don[']t drive it away, because that's me & i[']ll try to get there some way." --- she adds some news and good wishes --- signed, coz mary & alice; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
