Historical note: the linnean society of london was founded in 1788, a decade after the death of its namesake, the naturalist carl linnaeus, and is therefore the world's oldest active biological society. Linnaeus is still famous for his binomial nomenclature (genus species) by which all organisms are still named.
The premise of his categorization, that of a clear distinction between species, is, however, a perpetual problem in biology, as the system was developed before the theory of evolution had explicated the changes populations of organisms continually undergo over time. It is notable, therefore, that it was also the forum for the first public presentation of the theory of evolution as understood by charles darwin.
Nevertheless, the society as it exists today is dedicated to the study of and education concerning natural history, evolution, and taxonomy. It possesses important specimens, manuscripts, and literature in biology and the history of biology, publishes scientific journals and books, and awards medals and prizes in the field.
It is still headquartered at burlington house in london. Additionally, benjamin daydon jackson was a naturalist in the late 19th to early 20th centuries whose most significant work was the index kewensis, a reference work published from 1893 to 1895, which became the authoritative source throughout the world on flowering plants.
He was elected secretary of the linnean society in 1880. For details, see: linnean/the-society and wikipedia/wiki/linnean_society_of_london and wikipedia/wiki/benjamin_daydon_jackson; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
