A nicely-struck and virtually complete 1875+ "magenta" christman, illinois post office fancy cancel:

A distinctive design that is listed/traced by cole . . .

"fancy cancel" strike* **. . . This fancy cancel is probably a commercial type .

Further, this particular design is identified [by a unique alpha-numeric assignment] and is represented by an accurately-sized tracing in the authorative james m. Cole catalogue, "cancellations and killers of the banknote era: 1870-1894."

According to cole, some strikes may appear identical to others and have similar format, but actually exhibit slightly different dimensions, for example. These minor variations occur frequently with hand-carved designs because the original carved impression becomes damaged or otherwise unusable, and the designated "post office's carver" produces an extremely similar, but not perfectly identical replacement. Cole further acknowledges that the catalogue tracing may represent a second or later generation of a particular design although professional catalogers make every attempt to publish an exact representation of the original version whenever it is available [either...Preferably on-cover...Or if necessary, off-cover].
