Item Description
1945 two US V-Mail letters (you can see the silver in them) --- letters are to Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Ginter, Northeast Knott Avenue, Portland 12, Oregon --- first letter is from Lieutenant Roland E. Smith, Headquarters Division, 83rd Division Artillery, A.P.O. 83, c/o Postmaster, New York --- second letter is from Lieutenant Roland E. Smith, 324 Field Artillery Battalion, A.P.O. 83, c/o, Postmaster, New York --- A.P.O. 83 indicates that the writer is located in Vilshofen, Germany, although the dateline contradicts that --- letters are uncensoredFirst letter is dated Passau, Germany, and begins, Dear Ruth, Lyell, D D --- the writer asks, "Do you want to take a trip with me? I started out in a Jeep on the last day of May and left Helmstedt at 8 am." --- he continues, "Went through Halberstadt, Qued[linburg], Aschersleben, Eisleben to Halle."
He goes on, "Near Halle we went onto the Autoba[h]n on part of the networks of split hi[gh]ways that bypass all large cities." --- he relates, "We took it south as far as Nürnberg, the seat of N[a.-z-.i] Germany. All told we went about 300 miles. We spent the night of the 31st in Nürnberg in the building next to where the 1936 Olympic Swim meet was held." --- signed, Love, Roland
Second letter is dated 30 August (1945) and begins, Dear Ruth, Lyell, D D --- he says, "Just a quick note, after a hard day - mainly to answer your latest letter." --- he jokes, "You got the dope I wanted straight - sure you never served a hitch as a WAC?" (Women's Army Corps) --- he instructs, "And also go ahead on the 'Light Meter' - as the one I have now is an inexpensive one and I'm not too certain of its accuracy."
He tells, "we had a battalion retreat parade - yours truly finally getting awarded by the general the bronze star - and only after the first three attempts were flops." --- he admits, "of course, in front of a bn it is much more impressive. I wasn't impressed much as it started to rain and we had to march up to the general through a marsh field!" --- signed, love, roland; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
