Item Description
US V-Mail letter (you can see the silver in it) --- Letter is to Corporal William Eddy, Stuttgart Army Airfield Squadron, Stuttgart, Arkansas --- from Technical Sergeant Joseph F. Chudy, Headquarters, 133rd Airways and Air Communications Service (Unit), A.P.O. 757, c/o Postmaster, New York, New York --- A.P.O. 757 at this time indicates the writer is at Headquarters, US Forces, European Theater of Operations in Frankfurt, Germany --- letter is uncensoredLetter is dated Frankfurt, Germany, Sunday 29 July 1945 and begins, Dear Eddy --- the writer says of a recent message, "Pleased to hear from you once again and glad to find out that the perfume arrived safe and sound." --- he explains, "That had me worried I was afraid that it wouldn[']t reach you and that you would think I was a heck of a guy for not sending it. Many packages fail to reach th[eir] destination from here" (typos in original)
He remarks, "All I hope that the odor is what the 'Missus' likes, as I don[']t know the first thing about perfume. I relied on the saleslady to give me the proper type that I had asked for." --- he reports, "Have been here about three weeks now, as yet we are not completely settled down. All in all it isn't a bad set-up, there are two four story apartments, two twelve room houses and a four story office building in the block that we took over."
He describes, "Considering the condition of the other buildings in town, ours are in pretty good shape. One must see the [...] damage that has been caused by[ ]the bombings to really appreciate the thorough job that was done." --- he continues, "There isn't a building in town that has not been hit one way or another. Visited many of the other large cities over here and they all received the same treatment."
He asks, "how do you stand on getting released form the s[e]rvice? Unfortunately i have to stay ten more months, as i will[ ]not be forty till that time. That isn't too long after doing three years." --- he adds some comments about the weather and remarks, "and when one[...] has to wear od's with the te[m]perature about ninety, it is not too comfortable." --- signed, as ever, chudy; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
