Item Description
US V-Mail letter (you can see the silver in them) and cover --- War & Navy Departments - V-mail Service - Official Business --- U. S. Postal Service No. 1 Dec 6 1944 (December) circular dated postmark with wavy machine bars --- slight soiling --- back cover flap opened and folded inside coverLetter is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. R. Powers, West Green Street, Johnstown, New York --- letter is from Lieutenant K. J. Jeffers, 77th Engineer Light Ponton Company, A.P.O. 689, c/o Postmaster, New York, New York --- A.P.O. 689 indicates that the writer is at Headquarters, Northern Combat Area Command in Ledo, India --- self-censored with signature in censor's field at upper left
Letter is dated 2 September 1944 and begins, Dear Edna, Dick and Mabel --- the writer says, "I [...] received the May & June issues of Reader's Digest for which I want to thank you. I like the Digest very much and have taken a lot of enjoyment from reading it." --- he muses, "I suppose you find time to go up to camp once in awhile in spite of the victory garden and all the work you have to do."
He continues, "i would like to be able to go up there and try some fishing; we do some fishing over here but we always use tnt rather than a hook and line. It is nearly the fun but it does net us something to eat." --- he adds, "hope you are all in the best of health and enjoying the pinochle games. I suppose you are still having some games, at least once in a while." --- signed, as ever, ken; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
