Item Description

An unusual postal item as it is listed in Scott despite having no denomination or rate indicated. Another interesting aspect of this item is that the ornate printed indicia reads "United States Postal Service" which would become the official name of the Post Office Department 100 years later in 1972. The 1877 Post Office Department penalty envelopes is the only series of U.S. postal items to bear that designation before 1972. Good condition except that the gummed flap is pressure sealed at a small area near the tip.
