Item Description
United States, Scott #5820, used(o), 2023, Commemorative for the Return of OSIRIS-REx after a voyage of seven years; the first spacecraft to collect a sample of material from an asteroid; The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launched from Earth on September 8, 2016; it took the spacecraft two years to reach asteroid Bennu, arriving in December 2018.; OSIRIS-REx spent nearly two years photographing and mapping Bennu’s surface, searching for potential sample sites; in October 2020, it carried out its most important task – collecting a sample to bring back to Earth; Bennu is a carbon rich, solar-orbiting, asteroid in our solar system at about the same distance from the sun as our earth, 105 million miles vs 93 million miles; its size is about one-third of a mile at its equator; the asteroid is of concern because it has wandered into near-Earth space and has the highest risk of a future potential earth collision (1 in 2,700th chance between the years 2175 and 2199); such a collision would cause widespread devastation, tsunamis, fires, earthquakes, and climate change; the name OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security - Regolith Explorer) was chosen to pay homage to the Egyptian god Osiris, who was associated with the afterlife and resurrection and is most often represented as a heron, whose neck and beak resemble the spacecraft's sample collecting device; the spacecraft left Bennu's vicinity in May, 2021 and returned to a close-earth orbit on September 24th, 2023, dropped off its samples without landing, and was re-directed on a mission to study the asteroid Apophis which it will reach in 2029; the stamp shows an artist's rendition of the capsule containing the asteroid samples parachuting to Earth at the Utah Test and Training Range; issued as a forever stamp at a counter price of 66 cents, offset lithography printed by Ashton Potter USA (APU) serpentine die cut simulated 11 perforations, issued with non-water soluble, pressure sensitive, self-adhesive gum, multicolored, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, slightly off-centered (very fine), black-inked, horizontal, light, wavy line cancellation for fading intensity over the top right corner of the stamp and largely clear of the main images, good perforations, stamp was soaked from the mailing envelope using the Bestine solvent and placed on a piece of black trimmed card stock for an attractive and uniform album appearance, reasonable centering, mounting and largely image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
