Item Description
United States, Scott #5812, used(o) booklet stamp, 2023, Right-facing Donkey Piñata, third issue celebrating Spanish Heritage month and also as a holiday Christmas series; issued in booklet form with four different images, scholars believe piñatas might have their origins in China as a New Year celebration where a brightly decorated animal figurine was beaten with a stick until it broke open, releasing seeds contained in the hollow interior which foretold a bountiful harvest; brought to Italy by Marco Polo where the Italians used decorative clay pots (pignatta) for the ceremony and replacing the seeds with gifts, then to Spain where the piñatas, in Spanish, became a Lenten tradition, then to the new world, where they were used as religious instruction, the piñata represented the devil and temptation, the blindfolded “player” symbolized blind faith armed with the stick of goodness; breaking open the piñata showed the triumph of good over evil, today, they have morphed into a Christmas tradition as part of the Mexican Posadas, a nine-day festival held in early December that commemorates Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus, and the piñata tradition came from Mexico to the United States; ($0.66), issued in booklet format in double-sided panes of twenty as forever stamps with an issued counter value of 66 cents, issued with non-water soluble self-adhesive gum, serpentine die cut simulated perforations: 11, lithography printed by Aston Potter USA (APU). multicolored, Scott Supplemental Catalog Value: 25¢, nicely centered, black-inked, horizontal, wavy line cancellation across the top half of the stamp and over the main image, stamp is from the top left position in the booklet panes, imperforated at top and left, perforations at the right and bottom (IPPI), good perforations, this stamp was soaked from the mailing envelope using the Bestine solvent and placed on a piece of black trimmed card stock for an attractive album mounting; mounting, centering, and position of only two of twenty in the booklet warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.50 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.66 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
