Item Description
United States, Scott #4806a, used(o), 2013, Inverted Jenny, single, $2, in 1918, the US Post Office issued a 24¢ carmine rose and blue, air mail stamp (Scott #C3) featuring the Curtiss Model JN-4 in level flight, the aircraft was nicknamed the ‘Jenny’ from the ‘JN’ model code; by error, frame sheets were inverted at press time with the result that the Jenny airplane was shown inverted on the sheet, only one sheet of 100 of these stamps survived the issuing recalling process and was sold at face value of $24 over the counter; the stamps became the legendary ‘Inverted Jenny’ stamp rarity, the latest single issue auction for one of these stamps occurred on November 8th, 2023 with a hammer price of $1.7 million; in 2013, the post office, to honor the opening of the William H. Gross Gallery at the National Postal Museum displaying a block of four of these ‘inverted Jenny’ stamps, and issued a souvenir sheet of six $2 Jenny Inverts using the plates that were used to create the original stamps; this is one of the stamps from one of the souvenir sheets; offset lithography and engraved by Banknote Corporation of America (BCA), issued with non-water soluble adhesive on panes of six stamps, serpentine die cut simulated perforations: 10½x11¼, blue, black, and red, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: $1.25, very slightly off-centered (extremely fine) which is good for the issue as most are considerably off-centered, traditional, slightly upward slanting, duplex black-inked leading circle and trailing bars cancel, from left to right, half circular, single-rimmed, socked-on-the-nose cancel on the left border leading to four horizontal, broken-up, thick bar cancels over the right half of the stamp, stamp has a clear front surface which is unusual for the issue as most have one or more surface flaws, good perforations, stamp was lifted from the mailing envelope using the Bestine solvent and placed on a piece of black trimmed card stock for an attractive and uniform album appearance, centering, mounting, and sound front surface warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
