Item Description
Stamps, United States, Scott #2180, used(o), 1988, Great Americans Series; stamp honors the 50th anniversary of the invention of xerography and shows Chester Carlson (1906-1968), American physicist, inventor, and patent attorney who invented electrophotography (now xerography, meaning "dry writing"), which produced a dry copy in contrast to the wet copies then produced by the photostat; it is now used by millions of photocopiers worldwide; as Carlson himself said: “The need for a quick, satisfactory copying machine that could be used right in the office seemed very apparent to me—there seemed such a crying need for it—such a desirable thing if it could be obtained. So I set out to think of how one could be made;” using an electric charge over a plate that picked up the original image, the plate attracted ink particles, and a copy was made; on October 22, 1938, Carlson and an assistant, Otto Kornei, had their historic breakthrough; Kornei wrote the words ‘10.-22.-38 ASTORIA’ in India ink on a glass microscope slide; he prepared a zinc plate with a sulfur coating, darkened the room, rubbed the sulfur surface with a cotton handkerchief to apply an electrostatic charge, then laid the slide on the plate, exposing it to a bright, incandescent light; they removed the slide, sprinkled lycopodium powder to the sulfur surface, softly blew the excess away, and transferred the image to a sheet of wax paper; they heated the paper, softening the wax so the lycopodium would adhere to it, and the had the world's first xerographic copy; 21 cents, engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), perforated: 11, blue violet, Scott 2019 Catalog Value: 25¢, slightly off-centered, large, very faint, red-inked, double-rimmed, quarter circular socked-on-the-nose cancellation over the lower left of the stamp and just the main image, however, the lightness of the cancel leaves the main image virtually clear, sound back, hinge remnant, good perforations; centering and image clear cancellation warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.50 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.66 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
