Item Description
SCV $0.90 (2014). Single 32-cent stamp in MNH, VF+ condition; lithographed, tagged; perf 11.1 x 11. One of the foremost figures in 20th century American music, Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) played his way to fame as he took jazz out of the streets of New Orleans and into the national spotlight. Armstrong grew up in New Orleans and learned to play the trumpet and coronet when he lived at a waifs' home for a year as a boy. He later moved to Chicago. As his skills improved so did his popularity and by the mid-1920s his clarity of tone, outstanding technique, rhythmic freedom and genius for improvisation reached their zenith. His nickname was "Satchmo" which was short for "Satchelmouth" and he was also renown for his "scat" singing abilities. Lithographed & engraved, tagged, perf 11.1.Seller Information
