Item Description
Detailed Analysis of Scott #659Design Description:
This stamp is part of the "Kans." and "Nebr." overprint series, issued to prevent postal theft in Kansas and Nebraska during the 1920s.
The central design features a portrait of Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States, enclosed in an ornate frame.
The overprint “Kans.” is prominently displayed at the bottom center of the design, and the denomination “1 1/2 Cents” is shown in both bottom corners.
Soundness:
Condition: Faultless
The stamp has been hinged, which leaves a visible mark on the back. However, this does not affect the structural integrity of the stamp.
The original gum (OG) is intact and slightly disturbed due to the hinging.
There are no visible structural issues such as creases, thins, tears, or stains. The perforations are sharp and intact.
Soundness Grade: Faultless (Hinging is accounted for in pricing, not soundness.)
Centering:
Grade: 71 (Fine)
The stamp is off-center on one or two sides, with the edge of the design approaching the perforations. White space is present, though narrow, and the framelines remain intact.
This places the stamp within the Fine (F) category per PSE centering guidelines.
Perforations:
The perforations are sharp, uniform, and complete. There are no irregularities or missing teeth, which contributes positively to the overall quality of the stamp.
Eye Appeal:
Evaluation:
The brown color is vibrant and consistent, with excellent printing sharpness and a well-placed overprint.
The slight off-centering slightly affects the balance but does not significantly detract from the overall visual appeal.
The back is clean apart from the hinge mark, which is typical for hinged stamps.
The stamp falls into the Neat / Clean category for eye appeal.
Eye Appeal Grade: Neat / Clean
Final Numerical Grade:
Using the PSE Guidelines:
Soundness: Faultless
Centering: 71 (Fine)
Eye Appeal: Neat / Clean
The final grade is 71 (Fine).
Summary:
Final Grade: 71 (Fine)
Condition: Original Gum (OG), Hinged (mark only).
Soundness: Faultless.
Eye Appeal: Neat / Clean.
Attributes: Vibrant brown color, sharp perforations, and a well-applied overprint. The off-centering and hinge mark slightly detract from the overall grade but do not affect the structural or aesthetic integrity.
This Scott #659 is a well-preserved example from the "Kans." overprint series. Despite its minor limitations in centering and hinging, it remains a desirable and collectible stamp due to its historical significance and overall quality.
