Item Description
Design Description:The stamp commemorates the International Civil Aeronautics Conference, held December 12–14, 1928.
The design features an image of the Wright Brothers' first powered flight, flanked by the Washington Monument on the left and the U.S. Capitol on the right.
The denomination “2 Cents” is prominently displayed in the bottom corners, with the text "DECEMBER 12, 13, 14, 1928" inscribed beneath the image.
The stamp is printed in a vibrant red ink with excellent detailing.
Soundness:
Condition: Faultless
The stamp is never hinged (NH) and retains its original gum (OG), which is intact and evenly applied.
There are no visible structural issues, such as creases, thins, tears, or stains, on either the front or back.
The perforations are clean, intact, and undisturbed, adding to the faultless quality of the stamp.
Soundness Grade: Faultless
Centering:
Grade: 77 (Fine-Very Fine)
The stamp is noticeably off-center, with one or two margins significantly closer to the perforations than the opposite sides. However, there is visible white space on all sides, and the framelines do not touch the edges.
This matches the Fine-Very Fine (F-VF) category per PSE centering guidelines.
Perforations:
The perforations are sharp, consistent, and fully intact, with no irregularities or missing teeth. This enhances the structural integrity and overall aesthetic of the stamp.
Eye Appeal:
Evaluation:
The color is rich and vibrant, with excellent sharpness in the printing and fine details of the design.
The off-centering slightly affects the visual balance but does not significantly detract from the overall appeal.
The back is clean and bright, with no visible discoloration or gum disturbances.
The stamp fits within the Neat / Clean category for eye appeal.
Eye Appeal Grade: Neat / Clean
Final Numerical Grade:
Using the PSE Guidelines:
Soundness: Faultless
Centering: 77 (Fine-Very Fine)
Eye Appeal: Neat / Clean
The final grade is 77 (Fine-Very Fine).
Summary:
Final Grade: 77 (Fine-Very Fine)
Condition: Original Gum (OG), Never Hinged (NH), Faultless.
Soundness: Faultless.
Eye Appeal: Neat / Clean.
Attributes: Vibrant red color, sharp perforations, and exceptional detail in the printing. The slight off-centering limits the grade but does not diminish the stamp's overall appeal.
This Scott #649 is a pristine, well-preserved example with historical significance, making it a desirable addition to collections focused on aviation or U.S. commemorative issues. The faultless condition and vibrant design compensate for the slight centering imperfection.
