Item Description
Analysis of Scott #336 (U.S. Postage, 6 cents, Washington Head Issue)Design Description:
The stamp features a portrait of George Washington, framed by an intricate design with bold "U.S. Postage" text at the top and "6 Cents" at the bottom. The orange color gives the stamp a vibrant appearance, consistent with early 20th-century definitive issues.
Back Description:
The back of the stamp reveals multiple issues:
Damaged: There are significant thins and visible disruptions in the paper.
Evidence of a hinge is present, and the stamp lacks gum, which is typical for a used stamp.
Additionally, there is a light crease, contributing further to its faults.
Evaluation Based on PSE Guidelines:
Centering: 77
Assessment: The stamp is noticeably off-center, with one or two margins significantly closer to the edge than the others. However, the framelines remain visible and clear of the perforations, placing it in the Fine-Very Fine (F-VF) category for centering.
Soundness: Damaged
Assessment: The large and deep thins, along with the light crease, classify this stamp as Damaged under PSE guidelines. This significantly lowers its overall grade.
Perforations: Intact
Assessment: Despite the other issues, the perforations remain intact, evenly punched, and free from any short or pulled perfs.
Eye Appeal: -8 Adjustment
Assessment: The cancellation is heavy and obscures much of the design, further detracting from its visual appeal. Combined with the visible faults, this results in a -10-point deduction for eye appeal.
Final Numerical Grade:
Base Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (F-VF)
Soundness Deduction: Substantial reduction due to Damaged classification, bringing it to the Fair (10-19) range.
Base Grade: 19
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
-10 points for heavy cancellation and visible faults.
Final Grade: 11
This places the stamp in the Fair (FR) category, reflecting its significant condition issues and diminished visual appeal.
