Item Description
LIVERMORE & KNIGHT PIONEER Post Cards with a Direct Mailing aspect: TWO; both have stamps in "collars," (Scott #264 & 279), first is the burro, 1c Blue issue tied to collar with horseshoe, addr Stratford CT, 1895 date on card, very scarce card, the advertisement would have gone in the burro's bag, the bag still has it's flap and latch to raise it but does NOT have the ADVERTISMENT which would have gone in the sack, light soiling especially to stamp side, light crease, still in much better condition that these 125-year-old cards are usually found, then the second card is the man with baggy pants design, 1c Green tied to card over suitcase and umbrella collar, addr "City" (Providence RI, as all these were mailed there), the ad would have gone below the pants, but again it is MISSING, crease shows on stamp side, both cards are very intact except for the ads. The stamps were added by the printer and taken en masse to the Providence Post Office making them some of the first direct-marketing mailings ever, Fine-VF.The cards are paired in the photos. In other words the face of the first card is shown with the stamp side of the second. The face of the second card is shown with the stamp side of the first.
Knight was the founder of the Livermore & Knight Co of Providence, Rhode Island. He began his business career in 1875 as an amateur letter press printer, and from this beginning built up an organization which has become known throughout this country and abroad. On January 1, 1883, he formed a partnership with Frank D. Livermore, an expert steelplate engraver, and they incorporated as The Livermore Knight Company. Stamp collectors like these cards for several reasons: Most have early precancels or collars. These two cards both have collars onto which the stamp is affixed. All of these cards can be considered Pioneer Post Cards and most are mechanical.
The donkey design is MUCH rarer than the baggy pants design.
