THE HUBBELL STAMP: three Items; incl Mint VLH example of the Green Your Name is Taken From Hubbell American Bank Note Co. printed adhesive, then two covers; incl Rare 1899 updates envelope 5.5" x 4.5", depicts stamp, 1c Green Bureau issue (#279, piece off corner), tied by 1899 NYC third class machine cnl, addr BERLIN GERMANY, an unusual design that I personally have never seen before, also a 2c Wash-Frank on more familiar cover with the stamp shown in its natural Green, 309 Broadway address, 1911 Hudson Terminal cancel, fault in UR corner and bit of flap missing, window env (but postmarked Lowell Mass on reverse), very scarce grouping, Fine-VF

The Hubbell stamp was a directory stamp (or a subscriber's stamp as it was called in the directory itself). It gave you access to information and people noted and contained in Hubbell's Legal Directory of the US and Canada. In one form or another this company has been around since 1869 up to date (albeit on-line now). The stamps themselves were issued from roughly 1890 (per Drummond) to 1928 or so. I personally see the covers from the teens and early 20s a lot, but I have NEVER seen anything with the image of this stamp from the 1890s, until I acquired the cover in this lot.
