Item Description
United States, Scott #2875a, used(o), 1994, Centennial of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing' First Postage Stamps, the stamp is a single stamp from the Souvenir Sheet, stamp shows President James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, portrait is based on a painting made by Gilbert Stuart in 1804; Madison was then serving as secretary of state under Thomas Jefferson and succeeded Jefferson as president in 1809; Stuart painted Madison and his wife, Dolley Madison, separately, but the portraits were intended as a pair; the artist posed his subjects so they would turn toward each other; the etching for the stamp was based on the dies for a similar $2 Madison stamp printed as part of the First Bureau Issue of 1894 (Scott #262), a fitting choice for the celebration of 100th Anniversary of the Bureau, 2 dollars, lithography and engraved and also printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), perforated: 11, blue, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: $2.00. Slightly off-centered (very fine), very faint, red-inked, double-rimmed, half-circular, socked-on-the-nose cancellation that just shows at the top left corner and then fades away leaving the main image totally clear, sound back, bottom side perforations have been scissor cut by the postal customer, otherwise good and normal perforations; image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium, but abnormal perforations calls for an adjustment, so a wash. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
