Item Description

This cover was mailed from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada to Berrien Springs, Michigan on January 1,1943 franked by a 30-cent carmine Memorial University College issue (Scott 267; SG 290) on its First Day of Issue.* The stamp is tied by a St. John's G.P.O. circular date stamp.

*My (outdated) Scott catalogue has the first day of issue for this stamp as January 2nd, as do old Unitrade catalogues. Other catalogues (like a more recent Unitrade and Stanley Gibbons) have it as January 1st as cancelled. Its highly unlikely this is an early use. Rather, it is an FDC and the older catalogue dates are either typos or have been date-corrected for more recent editions.

Back stamps: a black 'Head P.M. / G.P.O.' straightline H/S and a purple double circle Registry H/S from Berrien Springs.

Verso has manuscript return address (Toronto) and is imprinted: 'Design RD 1929 B.-E. Ltd.'

Slit open bottom, the backflap is sealed and intact. No contents.

Light horizontal or vertical lines in the images are scanner artifact !
