Item Description

This business-size cover was mailed from Springfield, Illinois to Keene, New Hampshire in 1976 franked by a 13-cent Eagle & Shield issue of 1975, Scott 1596. A Lincoln's New Salem Station, Springfield Celebration '76 pictorial featuring Abe going thru his mail and his stovepipe hat ties the stamp to the cover.

The cachet pictures a mail stagecoach and reads:
'Lincoln's Post Road
New Salem - Springfield
Dedication Feb. 12, 1976 Bicentennial Celebration.'

Content (too large to fit my scanner) is a large sheet printed on both sides, one detailing the history of the mail route and how it will be traveled on its dedication and how the pictorial was only used for one day; the other side is a copy of the Illinois State Proclamation regarding the bicentennial, Abraham Lincoln Post Road Day, and includes the state seal.

Slit open top, the backflap is sealed and intact. Manuscript name/address on backflap. No contents or backstamps.
