Spanish Antilles Rocket Mail 1st Experimental Flight Oct 1 1939 SKU 15590 Our selection includes 3 blocks of 4 one with all 4 stamps overprinted and 2 blocks with mixed overprints Only 6 sheets of 42 stamps 6x7 were prepared and each sheet has 2 bottom rows un-overprinted Thus only 42 mixed pairs (top overprinted bottom un-overprinted) can exist Here we offer 4 of them Number of overprinted stamps is also very limited as part was used for flight covers Total number of stamps was 6x28 = 168 stamps For more information: See extracts from Billig catalog Rocket Mail in images 3 and 4 Dr Tomas A Terry the president of the Cuban National Philatelic Club organized the Cuban rocket mail The first rocket carried 70 covers Matanzas revenue stamps were overprinted with PRIMER COHETE AEREO 1939 and used to frank the covers A large C 1 first flight cachet was added The launch was a failure Taking place on October 1 1939 the rocket exploded after traveling only about 40 feet According to Dr Terry The sheet consists of 6 across by 7 down 42 stamps total The two bottom rows are not overprinted There are various combinations of overprinted and un overprinted stamps in different positions Selection also includes 3 sheets issued to 15th anniversary of experimental flight
