The abolition of Slavery Act 1833 outlawed the British trade in enslaved people and granted freedom to enslaved people in the Caribbean.However the freed slaves were frequently forced to work as indentured labour for their former masters for a low wage. 1833 also coincides with the death of William Wilberforce the leading anti-slavery politician in the British parliament.
