Item Description
Two majestic sailing ships, the Hans Egede and the Gertrude Rask, important to Greenland's trade with Denmark, both sank in the Spring of 1942 under suspicious circumstances, leaving Greenland undersupplied amid mounting wartime fears. Both ships are pictured on this nice set from Greenland, that pays tribute to Greenland's reliance on Maritime Navigation.The handcolored cachet shows a Greenlandic Polar Bear using the same type of astrolabe tool shown in the First Day of Issue pictorial cancel that ties the stamps to the cover.
The cover is on an envelope handmade from blue stationery, and received its two FDoI cancesl on Tasiilaq, Greenland on 20 August 1998. The reverse bears the Puffin Cachets logo and shows that this is cover #1 of only 6 sent to Greenland for servicing!
