Item Description
Southern California's biggest stamp show - SESCAL - chose to celebrate the 1869 completion of the Transcontinental Railroad as their theme for 2019. Conveniently, stamps were issued in the Spring to also commemorate this event, so putting the two together was a natural impetus to create a cover!Members of the Claude C. Ries Chapter of the AFDCS who were in attendance at SESCAL for a chapter meeting each received one of these pop-up covers. The cachet is a newly-colored version of a CACHETOON that first appeared in 1984 for the Classic Locomotives booklet pane.
Folded, it fits in your album, but opened to its full 11" width, it displays THE JUPITER - the locomotive seen on the stamp - startling a pair of chickens and a bovine duo.
This particular cover is franked with the JUPITER single as well as the GOLDEN SPIKE stamp, and both are cleanly struck with SESCAL's pictorial cancel of October 4, 2019 in Ontario, CA.
The moiré effect seen in the images is not present on the actual cover.
