Item Description
Grade: VF (Very Fine)Ultra-premium block of 16 of Scott #658, the 1c Kansas Overprint, Franklin issue of 1929, mint condition, all never hinged. The Kansas-Nebraska overprints were issued in response to thefts in the midwest, but it didn't really help, so they were only available for a short period. Sales, however, were not limited to Kansas and Nebraska as the sheets were available in other states as well. This block is nearly 95 years old and in great condition with no significant perf seps or other faults. Very difficult to come by, the Scott Catalog value of the 16 singles at $5 each for a total Scott Catalog value of $80. A word about authenticity: Although this block has not been expertized, it meets all the accepted standards for authenticity for the Nebraska Overprints. The definitive work on the subject is Schoen and DeVoss Counterfeit Kansas-Nebraska Overprints on 1922-34 Issue, American Philatelic Society (1973). It lists several criteria for determining authenticity including, color and perforations of the stamp, placement and look of the overprint, presence of breakers and ridges in the gum, and the absence of any markings on the gum from the overprint. All of these factors point toward authenticity. In addition, with regard to multiples and blocks, additional criteria include the plate numbers if available, the overprints being lined up both horizontally (they overprints on the same line) and vertically (the “K” from the overprints line up), and the overprints are the proper and consistent distance apart. Again, this block meets all the criteria for authenticity. Finally, the book comments, “Blocks of four or larger, mint or used, are assumed to be genuine if they meet the above tests. Almost 99 percent of the counterfeiting is done with single stamps. Seldom does one encounter blocks that are not genuine.”The block on the image is the one you will receive. NO STOCK IMAGES! Perf seps along the narrow selvage are common and may occur. Any other issues will be visible on the image or noted in the condition description above. Please check out my other listings.
