Scott #314A - 4¢ Schermack Type III vertical notches - Only known commercial cover!! Scott Catalog Value $140,000

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT 20th CENTURY UNITED STATES RARITIES. Tied on cover by "Detroit, Mich., Jun 2, 1908" cancel to U.S. Customs office. It is the only cover known with the stamp used as intended, the other three known covers being philatelic in nature. Ex Schmalzreidt, Lawrence Fisher and Roger Brody. Realized $160,000 hammer price at 2002 public auction. With 1957 and 1996 Philatelic Foundation Certificates.

In May, 1908 twenty-five full imperforate sheets (10,000 stamps total) of the 4¢ Grant definitive were received from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing by the Schermack Company in Detroit, MI. All were cut into coils with Schermack Type III perforations and delivered to the Winfield Printing Co. for mass mailings of advertising materials for the Burroughs Adding Machine Co. and The Hamilton Carbardt Co.. Fifty were purchased by a local Detroit collector of which three are known to have used on the three known philatelic covers. All of the remaining 9950 stamps were used on the commercial catalog mailings as intended. Of those only one intact cover is known to exist. THIS IS IT!!
