FDC produced for the 40c stamp issued in Washington, DC, on October 13, 1980, in honor of Philip Mazzei, American Patriot (Sc. C98). Mazzei was an Italian physician, a promoter of liberty, and a close friend of Thomas Jefferson. He acted as an agent to purchase arms for Virginia during the American Revolutionary War.
