Item Description

The item in this listing is a single postally used postage stamp issued for use in the Russian Post Offices network in China. This stamp is listed in Scott as Russian Offices in China #59. This stamp was an ordinary Russian definitive until being overprinted diagonally with its' equivalent value in Chinese currency i.e., “25 CENTS”.

In China, foreign post offices were operated not only by Russia, but also by France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the United States, and Japan. Belgium wanted to have post offices there, but never actually opened any. Most of these opened in the early decades of the 19th century. Russia had a distinct advantage over the other foreign post offices as Russia operated the Trans-Siberian Railway, connecting European Russia with the far Eastern port of Vladivostok and China. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, i.e. the era before long distance air mail, mail routed via the Trans-Siberian Railway travelled significantly faster than sea mail. Mail from the other foreign post offices did travel this route, but not until each country concluded treaties with Russia for this purpose.

Russia maintained its’ post offices in China until 1920, when it closed them in the wake of the October Revolution. All the foreign post offices in China were closed by the end of 1922.
