Russia 2016,WW-2,Way to Victory Heroic Defense of Brest Fortress, # 7734,VF MNH**Start of the Series :The Way to Victory 1941-1945 The Brest Fortress, defended by the Red Army against the Wehrmacht, held out longer than expected and, after the Second World War had finished, became a symbol of Soviet resistance. In 1965 the fortress received the title of Hero Fortress for the 1941 defense.The defense of Brest Fortress was the first big battle of Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of Soviet Russia in World War II. The battle took place from June 22 to July 29 1941 way after Main German groop marched forward. As the defenders had received no warning, the German Heer (army) expected to take Brest on the first day with infantry and artillery only. The defense of the fortress by the Red Army lasted for several days; the defenders lost many men killed and captured and the fortress was taken only after two bombardments by the Luftwaffe. The Fortress defenders held literally to the last man and more them a month !!
