Recovery of Apollo 8 from the Pacific Ocean Recovery ship USS Frances Marion (LPA-249)This cover commemorates the Apollo 8 Space mission AS-502 launched on 12/21/1968 from Cape Canaveral, FL. The space capsule, contained 3 astronauts: James Lovell, Frank Borman and William Anders. Their mission was to fly to the Moon, make 10 full orbits, obtain possible landing sites and gather necessary information about the Moon's surface and return to Earth. Returning to Earth, they splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on 12/27/1968 where they were picked up by Helos from the USS Yorktown (CVS-10). The splashdown was in the Pacific Ocean about 5,100 yards from the Prime Recovery ship USS Yorktown (CVS-21), 147 hours after launch and precisely on time. This particular cover is cancelled on board the USS Frances Marion (LPA-249), one of the Atlantic Fleet Recovery Force. This cover was Hand signed by Astronaut Frank Borman, part of the AP-8 crew. Borman died recently on 11/10/2016 in his home town, Billingsly, MT at age 95.
