Item Description
The Rattlesnake Island Local Post is one of the best known, and most legitimate, of all US Local Posts. The small, privately-owned island - 11 miles off the northwestern Ohio coast in Lake Erie - has issued stamps since the late 1960s for mail flown into the island after being delivered by the Postal Service to Port Clinton, OH. In order to prevent confusion with official US postage, the Post Office Dept. ordered the Rattlesnake Island Local Post to only issue stamps in a triangle format! Over 170 RILP stamps have been issued over the years - all depicting island views or native wildlife.On August 15, 2008, the RILP issued their 28th set of 3 stamps - 25¢, 50¢ and $1 - to pay the fee for delivery from Port Clinton, via a small airplane.
This FDC for that set bears a 37¢ Ohio Bicentennial single, as well as a 20¢ Pheasant stamp, which celebrates the small flock of pheasants on the island, represented by a Pheasant admiring a Peacock on the 50¢ stamp.
The cachet features a Rattlesnake confronting a Pheasant, whose tail folds out from the rear of the envelope to complete the image!
The reverse bears a lightly struck rubber stamp image from the small airline that delivers the mail, as well as the indication that this is cover #10 of only 20 serviced!
